Thank you for the laugh! About time someone took the pressure valve off the newbies! I'm just so darn happy to be here! Really! That's not sarcasm.
I'll be in the corner fumbling my way through right after I subscribe to every interesting story restacked and then procrastinate my time reading through all my emails instead of writing. I know, I know, I should write. Wait, I need to revamp my welcome email? Hold on, I'll be right back!
In your settings, it is under "Basics" category. Right below "about page" is "Welcome email" and you can edit the template that is defaulted to send out to every new subscriber. I still have the template. I have yet to write something catchy and crafty to delight my new subscribers. Add it to the list of things yet to do. But, one of these fine days, I'll know how to talk to new people and say something charming.
A welcome mail is that email I receive every time I subscribe to a newsletter, but that I new subscribers of my newsletter won’t receive, cause I never thought to write one myself...
You’re very kind. I wrote it on a whim and just banged away on the keyboard, which is not my thing. I put it up to make fun of myself but then it seemed that a lot of people could relate. Starting here is kind of like trying to catch the wind. Even my cat can’t do that despite the fact that she always -- always -- catches her laser dot. 100% success rate.
You’re darn right. Take a peek at my early post about surviving Substack in my early days. I’m afraid I’m on my phone and can’t link to it. I look forward to digging into your writing. :)
Oh I love this. Thank you – it made me smile. I'm a newbie and although I'm a pro writer and wrote quite a complex blog for about 12 years I am so much more nervous on here, even with free posts. Strange, isn't it?
On another note: shame I'm in France. I have about 100 biodegradable poop bags, and with many remote acres here (no one else) for our two dogs to roam in I don't need to use them.
Roselle, I’m so very sorry I just saw your kind comment. I completely understand the nerves. I wrote for Forbes for 10 years and would write and press send. This is far more personal and I think that gives everyone pause, but the initial choppy waters go smooth out over time. So they tell me. I’m not there yet, but the more I contribute the more feedback I get. Also, Notes is a very interesting place with a lot of encouraging, kind, and kindred spirits.
Oh goodness not a problem! You've had loads of responses. And after the hurricane took down so many of our trees and lots of cables here in France I had no internet anyway, till Orange lent us a free dongle!
Russell’s, I’m glad you have been reconnected. I don’t think we realize how much we rely on Internet u til we don’t have it. Where in France do you live?
BTW, since I didn't receive any tips or clues or...well...responses when I asked on last week's Office Hours which I missed again because hey I only see that it happened after the fact, I'm going to ask here. I'd like to add some tabs along the very top in addition to the default "Home, Archives, About." I thought it was a Pages thing, but couldn't get that to work. "Sections" indicated a separate newsletter, so that can't be it. I know it's simple...once you know how to do it! Anyone know? Thank you so much in advance! Here is an ice cream cone or cup of coffee for you, depending on your preference. It's virtual, but as writers, we can conjure an image, aroma, flavor, and temperature exactly the way we like it, right? <3 Kate
Leanna, thanks so much. There are definite swings, but also a lot of great and supportive people here to encourage and help. I am very grateful to them.
So this made me laugh... when actually I just want to cry... I am feeling that anxiety too Ben, even more so this morning when the first email I saw was from Substack, someone (the second in as many days) unsubscribed and a friend no less, or at least I thought so! Am I writing complete shit, bad grammar? Too long a post? Not interesting? Maybe I should just stick to walking the dog instead? Urghhh... thanks for sharing this and making me smile...
Welcome to Substack, Ben! This made me smile. :) I’m about to celebrate my 1-year anniversary here and while new subscribers are wildly appreciated and they feed my ego, mostly I’m just glad to be writing again and this platform is so easy. Evidently we both contributed to Natalie’s poem. Her newsletter was the first Substack I subscribed to. Happy writing!
Deal. If you restack a piece you like, Substack posts that piece in your Notes. You can restack it with a comment. You can also grab text -- say, a quote you like -- and it will restack that piece in your notes along with a quote. You can also add a written note to that. It will ask you whether you wish to do so.
I am under the impression that notes is where all the fun is happening - but wait, you already said that. Anyways, thanks for bringing some lightness into this confusing thing!
This made me laugh a lot Ben! Thanks for writing it!! I’ve been here a little while longer and I’ve been getting fairly steady growth - I have decided that slow and steady is better than going viral, as exciting as that sounds!!

You nailed it. What's a welcome email?

Well I’ll have you know I subscribed:)
Thank you so much for your kindness. I did as well.
Seems like you struck a chord with this one 🤣 Guess those 7 subscribers were on to something!

As someone in the first two weeks here, this post brought me much joy. Thank you!
Shan, I'm very glad. Have fun. If you have any questions, please let me know.
I’m on “Thank God for my 5 subscribers!” @BenKerschberg will you be number 6?

Oh wait, that’s what you were responding to ! I couldn’t tell. Hang in there. They will come.

I see you have more than 7 subscribers ;-)

All best

Yes. Interestingly, a bit of me now wants to close it down and go and read a book, after two frustrating weeks without it.
We're smallholding in Brittany.

So relatable!

Very much is the same boat here Ben !
Constantly thinking “I’m so grateful to these 7 subscribers” 😂

Oh gosh, turn those unsubscribe notifications off as quick as you can! They’re not helpful 😬
P.S. I still don't understand restacking...

So great, thank you!! (I‘m still not quite sure, what restack means or what I am doing here, so we can do this together 🤝)

Thank you! It’s starting to make sense 😅

I'm still trying to identify the buses on the darn Captcha to log in.
*hitsrefresh *hitsrefreshagain 🙋♀️🤣
🤣 great post! Stick with it, Ben. Substack is awesome but it isn’t an overnight success 😊
